Tulsa Dog Training Service | What Is the Quickest & Fastest Way to Train a Dog?

Show Transcript

Speaker 1:
All right, folks. Welcome back to the Make Your Dog Epic Tulsa Dog training podcast, a podcast devoted to talking about all things related to Tulsa dog training, dog training in Tulsa, and anything possible you could think of related to training dogs in the Tulsa Oklahoma area. What we’re talking about today’s show is what is the quickest and fastest way to train a dog? And we’re joined here with Tulsa dog training expert JT Lawson. Sir, tell us what is the quickest and fastest way to train a dog?

JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, quickest way is going to be sending the dog to a boarding school with us, because then you’re going to be done in anywhere from one to three weeks, depending on how advanced you want the training. So, your dog could be done in a week if you want the basic options and you want the dog to come when called, stop jumping on people, barking at the door, pulling you down the street. Or we have the two or three week options if you want more advanced training, but that’s the quickest way. It’ll be done in a couple weeks.

Speaker 1:
Now I think of a lot of folks, they go to Google, they type in Tulsa dog training, and they go, “Wow, there are a lot of options.” I mean, you’ve got people that are focused on what appears to be a focused based training. There’s positive reinforcement training, there’s negative reinforcement training. Walk us through all the different kinds of training options that exist and maybe tell us what kind of dog training methodology that you believe in.

JT Lawson:
Yeah, there’s a ton of different dog training options and different types and methodologies. So there’s positive reinforcement, there’s negative reinforcement, there’s operant conditioning, there’s classical conditioning. There’s escape training, there’s fear-based training. There’s focused based training, there’s attention training. There’s so many different options. What we like to do is we have focused based positive reinforcement training. So that’s how we train and that’s the method we use. And at that first lesson, it’s 50 cents, and that’s where we’ll come out and we’ll actually show you in person how our training system works. Is we’re going to work with your dog in front of you at that first lesson, so you can make sure we’re a good fit for you.

Speaker 1:
Now, don’t mention the names of these people, but a lot of times dog trainers in our industry, they have all these manipulative dog training sales pitches. And it’s in every industry, by the way. So you see, I mean, there’s a furniture store we all can think of. They’re always doing the total close out going out of business sale. And they try to convince you that if you actually buy this mattress, if you buy the mattress, the mattress is an investment because it’ll actually go up in value over time because it’s a limited edition mattress. I mean, we’ve all been to the sleazy used car dealership where they’re trying to pressure you and lie to you, manipulate you. And then we’ve all been to the insurance salesman that has all these jujitsu mind tricks they’re trying to do on their customers.

At Make Your Dog Epic, we don’t do any of that. I mean, at Make Your Dog Epic, you go to makeyourdogepic.com, you schedule the first lesson for 50 cents, and then we let you figure out what package is best for you, Package A, Package B, or Package C. And we even have scholarship options to help out families in need. Walk us through some of the more absurd high-pressure sales techniques that you’ve heard about in the dog training industry. The ones that are almost laughable, but you’ve actually heard them attempted to be used by dog training competitors right here in Tulsa.

JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, some of them, what they’ll do is they won’t even do the first lesson. They’ll just say, “Hey, it’s going to be two months your dog’s going to be with us. It’s going to be four grand and we’ll give you the dog back after two months.” And you’re like, “Okay, well what do I get with that?” They’re like, “Well, we have no idea.” So, they literally have no system on what you’re going to get. And then we have people here in Tulsa where what they do is they try to mislabel what you’re saying so that then you’ll correct them. And it’s like this reverse psychology thing where they’re getting you to correct them. So then they can come back and be like, “Oh, okay, now I understand better.”

And they have all these different moves and then they have where they will walk out and then walk back in. They have a bunch of different moves where they’ll say… They kind of like the used cars men thing where they’re like, “Hey, I think I can get you a better price, but I got to go talk to my manager.” And then they’ll leave, talk to no one, come back and then magically have a better price for you. And that’s the many different things I can think of in the dog training world. There’s been some crazy things I’m sure I’m not thinking of at the moment.

Speaker 1:
Are you telling me that there’s people actually trying to intentionally “misunderstand” you quote unquote. I don’t even understand. What is the logic behind this?

JT Lawson:
Yeah, so the logic is, say you’re telling me something and I am like, “Hey, is it fair to say you don’t like our training method?” And then basically what they want you to do is they want you to be like, “No, I do. I like your training method.” And that way they’re like, reverse psychologying you or whatever you want to call it, whatever method it is. Or they’ll be like, “Hey, is it fair to say you’re not really that interested in getting your dog trained?” And then you’re like, “No, I’m super interested in getting my dog trained.” And they’re like, oh, awesome. Well, let’s get you signed up.”

And then they try to do all these moves where they play these word tricks on you to get you to sign up, or they’ll be like, “Awesome, well, I know you have to think about it, but let me get you down right now so that you don’t have to think about it, because you can…” It’s kind of like… I forget the line from Tommy Boy, but it’s like they use lines like that where you can get a better look at a butcher bulls… I forget the whole saying, just like he does in the movie.

Speaker 1:
What? This is real.

JT Lawson:
Yeah, that’s what they do.

Speaker 1:
This is real. This is a real thing.

JT Lawson:
Yeah.

Speaker 1:
So you’re telling me that if somebody goes out there, they do a Google search for Tulsa dog training, there are a group of adults that are gathered together in a dog training headquarters teaching these sort of reverse psychology sales techniques?

JT Lawson:
Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. They’re doing that and much more with the sales techniques. Basically they have rules where you can’t leave unless you get a for sure no or for sure yes. So if you’re like, “Hey, I got to think about it,”” they will not leave. You can say that a thousand times and they’re not leaving. So you have to either tell them a straight up, “I do not want to train with you,” or you have to be like, yes, but unless you give one of those two answers, they are not leaving your house. It’s kind of like the telemarketer that’s not allowed to get off the phone until you hang up. So, that’s kind of their move.

Speaker 1:
Okay. Now contrast that to what you do there at Make Your Dog Epic. Tell us about the process and maybe how painless it’s going to be, because I don’t think anybody wants to sit there and have a spirited high pressure sales, sort of a used car sales, sort of a multi-level, endless closing loop. I don’t think most people want to experience a timeshare level of high pressure sales. They just want to train their dog. Tell us about your method that you offer there.

JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, the biggest thing with us is before you even come out for that first lesson, you can read our reviews online. You can look at the testimonials where you can see from real clients that we’ve worked with. And I want you to hear from real people, not just the words out of my mouth. And then when we get there, my whole goal is just to have a happy dog.

I mean, truly, I’ve told people that, “Hey, I don’t really care who you train with. I just want dogs that are happy because behavioral issues are the number one reason why dogs get put down. And we fix 98% of behavioral issues in one to three weeks. So we’ll have your dog, all those issues fixed in about one to three weeks. And if you don’t like us, it’s a money back guarantee. So, you really have nothing to lose, but we’re not trying to upsell you, or if you do this package later on, you do this package or whatever. The price is a price, and we’ll actually beat anyone’s price. So, as you should, you should go look at multiple dog trainers. And then if you do, you find somebody that’s priced cheaper than us for the same sort of training, we’ll match it.”

Speaker 1:
Wow, you guys really have it all figured out there at makeyourdogepic.com. Again, makeyourdogepic.com. Final question I have here for you. I think a lot of people worry about the food they should be feeding their dog. What kind of food? Do you have any strong advice for people on what kind of food they should not be feeding their dog?

JT Lawson:
Yeah. It’s very controversial because some vets, depending on what veterinarian you go to, depends on the answer. For example, I took my dog to three different veterinarians for his nose. He had a little spot on his nose and one veterinarian said, “Hey, we need to remove it right away. We need to do surgery and remove it. It’ll be about three, four grand and we’ll have it off of him by the end of today.” Then I went to a different place and they were like, “Yeah, we need to put some ointment in it. It could be cancerous. We need to get it away.” And I went to a third option. They were like, “Ah, just leave it. It’ll be fine in two weeks.”

I went to three different ones. And I know it’s not related to food, but that’s how it works with food too. There’s tons of vets all throughout the United States. Depending on which one you go to, depends on the answer you’re going to get. And we typically recommend grain free dog food because you either pay now with food or you pay later in medical bills. So, you want to not cheap out on food. We typically, personally, we like grain free, but it’s very controversial on where you go to and your vet can tell you what specifically works best for your dog, but that’s what we recommend.

Speaker 1:
Now, why are you a big fan of dogs? I mean, why are you a dog lover? Why do you actually like dogs?

JT Lawson:
Well, I like dogs because they’re super loyal and they’re fun. You can teach them tricks and I mean, you see it in the movies. One of my favorite movies was like Eight Below, or I Am legend with Will Smith, which isn’t necessarily a dog movie, but there is a dog in the movie. And the loyalty of dogs like that is just really cool to me. And they’re man’s best friend, unlike cats, which you just have them and they’re just around everywhere. So I know you like cats. I’m not a big cat person.

Speaker 1:
Wow.

JT Lawson:
Because I feel like… yeah.

Speaker 1:
Shots fired. Shots fired. He attacks a cat. Now here’s the deal. I’ll tell you this. Everything you’ve said so far about dogs I happen to agree with. I do think that dogs are much more loyal, and I think that the dog really can become man’s best friend if the dog is properly trained. If you’ve built that epic bond and you’ve understood, and you’ve got to a place where you can understand your dog’s training journey, and that’s what you guys do. So, again, walk us through what’s the process. I’m listening right now and I want to hire you to help me teach my dog to become man’s best friend as opposed to a dog that’s holding me hostage.

JT Lawson:
Yeah. Go to makeyourdogepic.com, fill out the form or give us a call and we’re going to get back to you. And then we’re going to set up that first lesson where we’re going to go over everything with you and talk to you about different types of training where we fall, tell you a little bit more about us. And we’re going to tell you what it’s going to take to get your dog to your goals. And then we’ll tailor a package specifically for you, and we’ll go from there.

Speaker 1:
You are a dog training legend. We really do appreciate you and as we like to say here on the Make Your Dog Epic podcast, we’ll talk to you in five minutes.

JT Lawson:
Awesome.

Carl:
Is your dog and furry friend holding you hostage? Will your dog not stop pulling on its leash and eating your sausage? Who wrote that? Well, I don’t mean to brag, but I actually wrote it and wow, it rhymes. People dig it like a dog. You get it? Okay, so I’m just going to keep reading. Will your dog not stop jumping on you or pooping in your house like you’re on the set of Jumanji or living in a zoo? It only took me two weeks to write that line while sitting at the base of a waterfall while gazing upon my epic dog. The dog that once held me hostage was now my best friend.

Speaker 4:
It’s so good.

Carl:
The dog that would never listen was now all ears.

Speaker 4:
It’s so good. I just want to cry.

Carl:
Pull yourself together, man. And if you too want to transform your dog from a furry terrorist into your best friend, what you need to do is schedule your first lesson at makeyourdogepic.com where your first lesson is always just 50 cents. And with the savings, you can use that to pay the rent. Again, your first lesson is always just 50 cents at makeyourdogepic.com. Wow. Stop the endless barking. Reduce the aggressive behaviors. Stop your dog from biting Pam, your yoga pants wearing neighbor, as she just attempts to speedwalk in peace. Stop your dog from eating your wife’s wedding dress and peeing in your closet on top of your Christmas gifts. Stop the madness at makeyourdogepic.com. Experience the revolutionary focused based positive reinforcement training and methodology. Our goal is dog obedience, but never at the expense of dog personality. It’s the same dog, but now it’s all ears. Wow.

Speaker 1:
Man, Carl. You are a talented vocal artist.

Carl:
Well, well.

Speaker 1:
You can sense your… I can feel the passion. It’s contagious.

Carl:
Well, my friend, I am passionate about the product. I once went 60 days without sleeping.

Speaker 1:
Really?

Carl:
My wife’s wedding dress got eaten and my neighbor, Pam, was bitten by my dog. And-

Speaker 1:
Oh man.

Carl:
… my quality of life was at an all-time low. I actually didn’t invite people over to my home for months because of the new dog. And I always smelled like urine.

Speaker 1:
You do still smell a little bit like dog urine. Just a little.

Carl:
Before I made my dog epic, I was hostage. And that’s where the passion comes from. You’ve got to believe in your product and you’ve got to project from the diaphragm.

Speaker 1:
The diaphragm.

Carl:
To bend your knees.

Speaker 1:
Bend the knees, bend the knees.

Carl:
Drink ginger.

Speaker 1:
Drink the ginger.

Carl:
You’ve got to ingest apple cider vinegar.

Speaker 1:
Apple cider.

Carl:
And with a dog bone, you want to chew on the dog bone before the-

Speaker 1:
Hard pass. Not going to-

Carl:
Recording so that you can emulate the dog. And you should listen to Atomic Dog.

Speaker 1:
I can do that.

Carl:
But you’re not a dog.

Speaker 1:
Right.

Carl:
But you want to just chew on the bone. The oversized bone, not the regular size bone.

Speaker 1:
Not going to chew on the bone.
