Clay Clark:
All right, welcome back to the Make Your Dog Epic podcast. My name is Clay Clark. I’m joined here with JT Lawson, where we talk about all things related to Tulsa dog training and dog training classes, Tulsa, Oklahoma. So if you’re out there and you have a dog and you’re looking for dog training classes in Tulsa, Oklahoma, you’ve come to the right place, where we tend to fix 98% of your dog problems and dog related issues.
Also, JT, you do a money back guarantee despite making sure that your first lesson is just 50 cents. Walk us through how is it possible that you’re offering dog training lessons and your first lesson is just 50 cents?
JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, we just want people to be able to experience what we do first. So it’s kind of like a try before you buy thing, and that way you can make sure that we’re a good fit and we can check out your dog, see where your current issues are, and then get on a plan to fix them.
Clay Clark:
Now how can you, what’s the difference, I guess, between a dog training class and a dog training lesson? Like a dog training lesson’s over here, dog training class? Is there any difference, or is it the same thing?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so there’s a difference. So the dog training class would be like group class, typically. That’s what people typically refer to as the classes, is where you’re going to have many dogs and you’re going to be training in a group environment. And then the dog training lessons are where it’s normally one-on-one with a trainer. So it’s a trainer training the dog and you, but it’s just you guys. There’s no super heavy distractions like you would have in a group class.
Clay Clark:
Now, let’s talk about the actual packages. So in your case, if you offered somebody a dog training immersion program, also some people call it a Tulsa dog training bootcamp, some call it a dog training immersion program, but what you do is you pretty much guarantee those results. And I’m going to walk people through what you guarantee or claim to include with all the packages there.
So first off, you are going to actually do the dog training yourself. So someone could drop off the dog, but you are doing all that dog training related homework. Is that accurate? Or maybe clarify that for me.
JT Lawson:
That is accurate, yes. So if you do the dog boarding, the dog boarding school, we will do all of the homework for you. So we’re training the dog and teaching the dog everything, and then at the end, you don’t have any homework and we’re bringing the dog back and we’re going to go over with you and the whole family how to do the training, when to do the commands, when to do this, when to do that, and then the dog just knows everything and you’re just, you’re ready to rock and roll.
Clay Clark:
So point number two, I mean, you’re offering what sounds like customized dog training for the actual dog owners. Is that accurate?
JT Lawson:
That is accurate, yes. So we’re finding a package that specifically fits your needs and it’ll get your dog to your goals. Because every dog’s different. Everyone’s goals are different.
Clay Clark:
Now, if I have a very difficult to train dog, a dog that’s hard to train, difficult to train, I understand that’s included in your dog immersion training program as well. You actually work with difficult to train dogs.
JT Lawson:
Yes. So we do that. We typically recommend the dog boarding school for dogs that are super hard because that way you don’t have to go through any of the headache of training it, and you can just let the professional trainers train your dog.
Clay Clark:
Now, as far as the length of time it takes to train a dog through the immersion program, some programs are saying it takes two to four weeks. I’ve seen programs claim that it takes months. How long does your dog training immersion or your Tulsa dog training immersion and Tulsa dog training bootcamp program take?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so our program takes one to three weeks, and there are programs that I’ve heard of that take six to eight months-
Clay Clark:
Wow.
JT Lawson:
… where you send your dog away. Yep.
Clay Clark:
Now, one thing you do is that you work with dogs of all different breeds and all different temperaments, all different backgrounds, all different genetic backgrounds, all different environmental backgrounds. You work with dogs of different ages, dogs with different issues, different needs. Walk us through, if somebody goes to makeyourdogepic.com and they’re looking to schedule that first lesson, what kind of dogs will you work with and what kind of dogs will you not work with?
JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, a lot of people think their dog’s too old. I guarantee you it’s not. I’ve trained multiple 13-year-old dogs. The dog has to be at least four months old, three to four months old, and then any breed. So there’s not a breed we won’t work with, from five pound chihuahua. So we’ve worked with Tibetan Mastiffs, just anything. We’ll do it.
Clay Clark:
Now, one of the things that you also do, again with that guarantee, you meet with someone, the first lesson is 50 cents. Then you sit down and give people the package options, package A, package B, package C. There’s more details than that, but the idea is the third package is for that very, maybe somebody who is a bougie dog owner who wants to teach their dog a variety of hard to teach tricks. That second package is more of a middle of the road package as far as pricing, and that first package is just the basics there. But with all those packages, you offer a quality guarantee or what some may call a satisfaction guarantee. How does that work?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so basically it’s us putting our money where our mouth is. If it doesn’t work, we’ll give you your money back. So we are guaranteeing you that we can train any dog. Where a lot of people use the terminology, “It might stick,” it’s basically their excuse to either blame you or the dog after training if it doesn’t work.
Clay Clark:
Now, one of the things that you guarantee to teach in your dog training lessons or that you guarantee the owners of their dog, this is what your dog is going to learn, is you teach the dog basic commands. You help make sure that the dog stops barking at people, jumping on people. You help potty train dogs. You help stop, whenever you have a dog that’s pulling on the leash or a dog that’s using the restroom in the home, a dog that’s biting at neighbors, the dog that’s biting at the kids, at the family, that’s barking all the time, there’s a lot of things that you include in your Tulsa dog training. It seems unbelievable. Walk us through what kind of results people can expect to experience if they hire Make Your Dog Epic Tulsa Dog Training.
JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, the results are honestly incredible compared to other places, because we’re getting there in one to three weeks, and your dog will know, any of the boarding classes, your dog will know, “Off,” which will be no jumping, licking, biting, growling, counter surfing, basically anything you would say, “Knock it off” to. And then they’ll know, “Place,” and other commands, and we’re going to teach the commands that are specifically tailored to your needs.
Clay Clark:
When you said counter surfing, are you talking about your dog being against the surfing culture or what do you mean by counter surfing? I think a lot of people are concerned that their dog might be against the surfing culture. Is that what you’re saying? Tell us what you mean by counter surfing.
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so counter surfing is basically they’re stealing food off of the counter, so it’s called counter surfing. So they’re getting up there, they’re taking a chicken off, and stuff like that.
Clay Clark:
So this is not against the surfing community in San Diego, where I’m sure there’s a lot of great San Diego dog trainers. Okay, so we continue here now. You teach these commands, and it’s not like it’s a big mystery here. I mean, there’s dog trainers out there that all have different verbiage they use.
You see a lot of dog trainers will say the phrase, “Stay.” Some will say, “Sit.” Some will say, “Stop.” There’s different dog training commands that are pretty popular. Walk us through the different dog training commands that are pretty popular, just so that if I’m out there looking for a Tulsa dog training class, that I make sure that I am aware of what sort of commands you may be teaching my dog.
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so the big main ones we teach, one is, “Place.” Place is kind of like a doggy timeout. It’s where it’s anything elevated and has a clear boundary and you tell them, “Place,” and then they just have to stay there no matter what’s going on, until you tap them on the head and say “Break.” And then the command, “Come,” which for us is the most important because it’s the one that will save Fluffy’s life later. Then you have, “Sit,” and “Down,” and then, “Off” and “Heel,” and then those commands, there are going to be the biggest ones that are going to all around make you have a well-rounded dog.
Clay Clark:
Now I don’t want to make this a bizarre spiritual part of the show, but there’s a lot of people who say, “I’m trying to get my dog to communicate with me. I want my dog to communicate. When I speak, I want my dog to understand. When my dog is trying to get my attention, I want to understand.”
And some might call this dog communication. Is that a real thing? Do you help the owners learn how to communicate more effectively with their dog? And do you try to teach the dog to understand what the owners are saying? Is that a real thing?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so I can’t teach the dog to speak English, so that’s not a thing.
Clay Clark:
Oh, come on.
JT Lawson:
Whenever your dog’s barking at someone and you’re like, “Hey, Fluffy, you’re fine, you’re fine,” the dog doesn’t know what you’re saying, so the dog thinks you’re saying, “Hey, this person’s probably going to murder us.” And so now you just keep reinforcing that barking and that negative behavior. So what we want to do is we want to teach your dog commands where they clearly understand what you’re wanting from them. So that’s what we mean by communication.
Clay Clark:
Now as far as our dog training team, our Tulsa dog training team, what we focus on is getting those results fast. We focus on getting you fast results, delivering results to you quickly. We want the results that we deliver for you, as somebody who signs up for our Tulsa dog training classes, we want those to be not instant, but we want them to be as quick as can be.
So for somebody out there that’s looking for that fast dog training results, again, I know you already talked about it a little bit, but how is our method maybe different than a lot of the dog training companies out there that really don’t have a specific turnkey plan?
JT Lawson:
So a lot of them are just, they went to YouTube University or they went to these dog training schools where there’s no governing body over them, and they’re just throwing a ton of different ideas out there. Like, I went to this one lesson, and this mom had a Great Dane, and the Great Dane had pulled the mom through an RV park.
Clay Clark:
Whoa.
JT Lawson:
And her hand got caught in the leash. So the dog started chasing after this guy on a bike, and the dog didn’t stop until dad tackled the dog.
Clay Clark:
Are you serious?
JT Lawson:
No, I’m serious. And so-
Clay Clark:
Wow.
JT Lawson:
I went there and the trainer that they had hired before me was using treats, a shock collar, a prong collar, a choke chain, and a harness all in one.
Clay Clark:
By the way, folks, if you go to anybody’s home and they have those [inaudible 00:10:31] in their living room, hard pass. Get out of there, folks.
Okay, so now the final thing is, as far as a Tulsa dog trainer that consistently is training dogs, that’s what you do. I mean, this is something that you do. You have a lot of dog groomers that recommend you. You have a lot of veterinarians that recommend you. You are a respected dog trainer right here in Tulsa. You do Tulsa dog training classes.
And a lot of people come to you because they think their dog is just well past the point of being unrecoverable. Maybe unredeemable, untrainable, these different words to say, “Hey, I cannot train my dog.” But you say, “Hey, no, no, no, just schedule the first lesson for 50 cents.” Why do you do that? Why do you say, “Hey, the first lesson is always just 50 cents at Make Your Dog Epic Tulsa Dog Training?”
JT Lawson:
Yeah, because I’m going to work with your dog right there. So those are the lessons I enjoy the most, where dad’s there and he’s like, “I don’t know why you’re here, buddy. I mean, my dog’s never listened. My dog’s 11. There’s no point in dog training.” But the mom just wants the dog to have more freedom to be out in the front yard, and I’m going to train your dog in front of you and show you that we can do it. So it’s going to be great.
Clay Clark:
Now if you’re out there today and you’re looking for a Tulsa dog trainer that you can trust, and specifically if you’re looking for Tulsa dog training classes, I know somebody out there, you’re looking for Tulsa dog training classes. You’ve been going to Google, typing in Tulsa dog training classes. You’re looking for the best dog training Tulsa has to offer. You’re looking for dog training classes right here in Tulsa.

So folks, we’ll talk to you in five minutes.
Is your dog and furry friend holding you hostage? Will your dog not stop pulling on its leash and eating your sausage? Who wrote that? Well, I don’t mean to brag, but I actually wrote it, and wow, it rhymes. People dig it, like a dog. You get it? Okay, so I’m just going to keep reading. Will your dog not stop jumping on you or pooping in your house, like you’re on the set of Jumanji or living in a zoo? It only took me two weeks to write that line while sitting at the base of a waterfall while gazing upon my epic dog. The dog that once held me hostage was now my best friend. It’s so good. The dog that would never listen was now all ears. It’s so good. I just want to cry.
Pull yourself together, man. And if you, too, want to transform your dog from a furry terrorist into your best friend, what you need to do is schedule your first lesson at makeyourdogepic.com, where your first lesson is always just 50 cents. And with the savings, you can use that to pay the rent. Again, your first lesson is always just 50 cents at makeyourdogepic.com. Wow. JT Lawson:
Man, Clay, you are a talented vocal artist.
Clay Clark:
Well, I-
JT Lawson:
I can sense, I can feel the passion. It’s contagious.
Clay Clark:
Well, my friend, I am passionate about the product. I once went 60 days without sleeping.
JT Lawson:
Really?
Clay Clark:
My wife’s wedding dress got eaten and my neighbor Pam was bitten by my dog.
JT Lawson:
Oh man.
Clay Clark:
My quality of life was an all time low. I actually, I didn’t invite people over to my home for months because of the new dog. And I always smelled like urine.
JT Lawson:
You do still smell a little bit like dog urine.
Clay Clark:
Well, I make my dog epic. I was hostage. And that’s where the passion comes from. You’ve got to believe in your product, and you’ve got to project from the diaphragm.
JT Lawson:
The diaphragm.
Clay Clark:
Bend your knees.
JT Lawson:
Bend the knees.
Clay Clark:
Drink ginger.
JT Lawson:
Drink the ginger.
Clay Clark:
You’ve got to ingest apple cider vinegar, apple cider. [inaudible 00:15:18] with a dog bone. And you want to chew on the dog bone before-
JT Lawson:
Hard pass. I’m not going to-
Clay Clark:
Recording so that you can emulate the dog, should listen to Atomic Dog.
JT Lawson:
I can do that.
Clay Clark:
But you’re not a dog. But you want to just chew on the bone, get the oversized bone, not the regular sized.
JT Lawson:
Hard pass. Not going to chew on the bone.
