Speaker 1:
All right, welcome back to the Make Your Dog Epic Tulsa Dog Training Podcast. And here we’re joined with Tulsa Dog training extraordinaire, JT Lawson. We’re talking about Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training. JT, how prevalent is it that a customer will reach out to you and say, “Hey, I’m looking to train my aggressive Tulsa dog.” As a percentage, if there’s 100 people that reach out to you for Tulsa dog training, how many are looking for Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training?
JT Lawson:
A lot, actually. Way more than you’d think. A lot of people are struggling with their aggressive dog in Tulsa, and we want to help them out. And we get that. I would say every one in three dogs.
Speaker 1:
One in three dogs is considered to be an aggressive dog?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, well, the parents think there might be some aggressive, like the mailman walks by, the dog barks, growls, whatever, or they’re barking at dogs on the leash, so maybe they don’t classify it as aggressive, but they’re reactive or whatever they’re doing.
Speaker 1:
How big is this Tulsa dog? On average. Are people calling you because they’re trained in a massive, like a Bullmastiff? If you haven’t seen a Bullmastiff, it’s like just a massive. The Bullmastiff has a head larger than a human head. Are people reaching out for that kind of thing or they training Chihuahuas? What’s normal? ‘Cause a lot of people are listening right now and they’re going, “Is my dog normal? Is my dog weird?” What’s the normal aggressive dog that you see here in Tulsa?
JT Lawson:
Yeah. Well, I would say it doesn’t really depend on the breed of the dog. ‘Cause we have five-pound Chihuahuas that we train all the time, and we’ve also worked with part wolves or Russian Bear Dogs, Tibetan Mastiff. So we train a bunch of different dogs.
Speaker 1:
Do you ever build a rapport with a dog where you’re sad to see the fully trained Tulsa aggressive dog, go back to the parents? Do you ever bond with the dog?
JT Lawson:
Oh, yeah, all the time. Absolutely. Yeah, the dogs are great. ‘Cause they come in and first lesson, they just want to eat you, and then by the end, they think we’re best friends. And so then they go home, and parents are super happy, and now the dog’s doing great. And no one wanted a dog before, but now the dog listens. It doesn’t bark or growl at people when they walk by, and now you can have a much better life.
Speaker 1:
Let’s say that I went to Make Your Dog Epic, and I was looking for Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training. I fill out the form. What can I expect from that point forward? Because I know that the first Tulsa dog training lesson is 50 cents. I know on the site that you’re claiming that you have specials from time to time where you’ll beat anybody’s price or match their price. But what can I expect from the time I fill out the form? They’re requesting Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training lessons.
JT Lawson:
Yeah. Our team will reach out to you, and we’ll find a time to schedule that first lesson. And then at that first lesson, we’re going to go over a bunch of different stuff about your Tulsa aggressive dog. So we’re going to tell you more about us. We’re going to work with your dog. We’re going to figure out what you’re actually struggling with, and we’re going to tell you what it’ll take to get your dog to your goals, and we’re going to give you a realistic expectation. And we’re going to tailor the package designed for you, and then we’re going to work with your budget. So we have a package [inaudible 00:03:05]-
Speaker 1:
Help me find normal. What is a normal thing that the customer will ask about? They show up with their beautiful dog. They bring Lassie, they bring Turner and Hooch. It’s weird. They have two dogs and one named Turner, one named Hooch. They show up with their dog, Milo and Otis. They show up and they say, “Hey, this is Milo, this is Otis, this is White Fang, this is Cujo.” Or whatever. “This is Little King.” Whatever the dog’s name is here. And Little King, by the way, we’ve seen that passive-aggressive dog in our time. But if they bring a dog, then what kind of questions do they typically ask you about the Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so a lot of people want to know, “Is it too late to work with my dog?” Or, “Is my dog actually aggressive? Is it my fault?” And there’s a bunch of different stuff with that. So no, it’s not always your fault. There’s genetic aggression and learned aggression. So genetic is where if parents were just monsters, so mom and dad of the dog are already super mad all the time, just want to murder everything.
Speaker 1:
The parents of the dog or the actual dog’s parents or the people that are raising the dogs?
JT Lawson:
The actual dog’s, parents.
Speaker 1:
Okay. I was going to say, ’cause if you’re bringing a murderer, if a murderer wants to become a customer, if you’re out there listening today and you are a mass murderer, please do not fill out the form. Please do not. Okay. And then a lot of times people say, “Are you a Tulsa dog aggression expert? Are you a Tulsa dog behaviorist? Are you a premier Tulsa dog trainer?” How would you describe how you fit into that world of aggressive Tulsa dog trainers?
JT Lawson:
Yeah. For sure. Say Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training expert. That’s what I would say. We’re not really behavioralists, because a behavioralist can’t sit your dog down and doctor fill your dog and be like, “Hey, buddy, why are you doing this?” And for us, it’s not insensitive. I don’t care why you’re doing it. You just can’t. So we have to fix it.
So maybe the dog has a good excuse. Maybe for instance, somebody rang the doorbell, opened the door, beat the dog with the stick and left. And now every time somebody rings the doorbell, the dog gets super upset. That’s a fair reason not to like the doorbell. However, you can’t do that because there’s kids around. So it’s not really an excuse for you to be aggressive. We got to fix it no matter what.
Speaker 1:
Now, what I find is that aggressive dog behavior usually shows up in the following forms. It’s either like a learned behavior, it’s either like the dog’s trying to protect the owner. The dog might have some genetic, it’s like a wolf dog hybrid. Could you walk us through those three areas, whether it’s a protective behavior, it’s a genetic issue, or it’s a learned behavior? What’s the most common Tulsa Aggressive Dog Training issues that you see? Is it the protective behavior? Is it more of that genetic related issue, or is it more of a learned behavior that the dog has?
JT Lawson:
Yeah, so what we see most is learned behavior. So basically, what that means is the dog at some point has just learned that if they do an action, they get a response from it. So take for the mailman, for instance, mailman comes, the dog barks, mailman leaves. The dog in his head thinks, “Ah, heck yeah, I’m part of the Avengers. I saved the whole house. That mailman left because of my barking.”
And then it happens over and over and over, and it just gets worse and worse. And then what typically happens is the parents do some form of negative. So whether that’s shock collar or prong collar, or choke chain, newspaper, dad voice, squirt bottle, whatever it is, mailman comes dog barks.
If we light that dog up on a shock collar, that dog’s going to take the response one of two ways. Either one, it’s going to think, “Wow, every time the mailman comes by, mom gets pissed, and I get lit up on this collar.” And so now the behavior gets worse, or the other option is the dog listens, but at the expense of his personality, and that’s not the goal. So At Make Your Dog Epic, our number one goal is never obedience at the expense of personality. ‘Cause if you have to have a well-trained dog, but has to lose its soul in the process, it’s not worth it.
Speaker 1:

JT, I’ll give you the final word ’cause a lot of people that are looking up, they’re getting confused and they’re going online. They’re looking up Tulsa dog training and they’re learning about fixed aggression; they’re learning about controlled aggression. They’re reading all these books, all these magazines. They’re watching YouTube videos. They’re trying to figure out what’s going on. All they know is they want their dog to behave. What do people need to know?
JT Lawson:
Yeah. So what you need to know is there’s so much different information over dog training. ‘Cause there’s no governing body over it. So there’s a lot of people who tell you, “How to fix your dog?” And it does not work, or it’s going to make it worse. So for sure, reach out to us, do that 50 cents first lesson. I can sense. I could feel the passion. It’s contagious.
Speaker 3:
Well, my friend, I am passionate about the product. I once went 60 days without sleeping.
Speaker 5:
Really?
Speaker 3:
My wife’s wedding dress got eaten, and my neighbor Pam was bitten by my dog and-
Speaker 5:
Oh, man.
Speaker 3:
My quality of life was at all-time low. I actually didn’t invite people over to my home for months because of the new dog. And I always smelled like urine.
Speaker 5:
You do still smell a little bit like dog urine.
Speaker 3:
Well, I made my dog epic. I was hostage. And that’s where the passion comes from. You’ve got to believe in your product, and you’ve got to project from the diaphragm-
Speaker 5:
The diaphragm.

To bend your knees.

Drink ginger.

Drink the ginger.

You’ve got to ingest apple cider vinegar.
Speaker 5:
Apple cider.

I can do that with a dog bone. And you want to chew on the dog bone before the-

Hard pass.
Speaker 3:
… not going to recording so that you can emulate the dog. And you should listen to Atomic Dog.
Speaker 5:
I can do that.
Speaker 3:
But you’re not a dog. But you want to just chew on the bone, the oversized bone, not the regularized.
Speaker 5:
Hard pass.
Speaker 3:
Not going to chew on the bone.
