Tulsa Dog Training | Aggressive Dog Trainers In Tulsa Oklahoma

Show Transcript

JT Lawson:
All right, we are back with the Make Your Dog Epic podcast. And I’m JT Lawson. I own the Make Your Dog Epic location in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Yes, Tulsa dog trainer. That’s what someone called me. Some people have said that. And I’m joined here with Carter. He’s not a dog trainer.

Carter:
You don’t know that.

JT Lawson:
Yeah. He has never trained a dog, is that correct?

Carter:
That’s not true. I’ve trained dogs.

JT Lawson:
Have you tried training dogs?

Carter:
I’ve trained dogs. Just not very effectively.

JT Lawson:
How many dogs?

Carter:
All of them that I interact with.

JT Lawson:
I’ve seen your personal dog.

Carter:
Yeah. No, I’m just not effective at it, but I do try.

JT Lawson:
Okay. What do you do?

Carter:
I have advanced commands like sit, finger snap.

JT Lawson:
Yep. The good finger snap. That’s what you need.

Carter:
Hey, stop.

JT Lawson:
Okay, here’s what, just because I’m going to try to explain it the best I can for… Because everyone is watching this or listening to this on audio because we’re not filming it, so it’d be hard to watch this audio, you know what I mean?

Carter:
Yeah.

JT Lawson:
But I’m going to try to paint a picture like Bob Ross style words.

Carter:
With words.

JT Lawson:
This is how Carter trains dogs. And I am not personally attacking you.

Carter:
It feels like it.

JT Lawson:
I know it feels like I brought you on this podcast to personally attack you, but I want to talk about how Carter trains dogs.

Carter:
Yeah, you literally said, hey, I want you on the podcast and I won’t personally attack you and now here you’re about to, but go ahead.

JT Lawson:
Do you have… Possibly you say reactive, I say aggressive, Tulsa dog. So you have an aggressive dog in Tulsa? Some would say it’s a Tulsa aggressive dog. An aggressive dog in Tulsa, some would say. Would you say that?

Carter:
I would probably go with the Tulsa aggressive dog version of what you said.

JT Lawson:
Would you?

Carter:
I like Tulsa aggressive dog.

JT Lawson:
Okay, cool. That’s great. Well, this is Carter’s training technique. Okay. No tools. So no shock collars, [inaudible 00:01:48] collars, e-collars, choke chains, nothing. No treats.

Carter:
Emotional connection.

JT Lawson:
No treats. This is how Carter gets his dog to sit. Tulo, sit. Tulo, sit. Tulo, Tulo, Tulo sit. And then Tulo sits for a second. I’ll give you that. After the fifth time, after you yell, he sits.

Carter:
It’s usually the third time.

JT Lawson:
You move an inch. And what happens? He gets up.

Carter:
No, he’s good at six inches.

JT Lawson:
So anyways, we’re going to talk about what we are here for.

Carter:
Once you take two steps back…

JT Lawson:
Which we’re talking about Tulsa aggressive dogs. I just want to take that moment to personally attack you about your dog training.

Carter:
I feel attacked.

JT Lawson:
Yeah, that’s good. So I want to tell you a story and I want to get your thoughts and what you think of the story. Because I’ve trained a lot of aggressive dogs in Tulsa. And one of the stories is I went to the… Because we offer our first lesson for 50 cents. So our first lesson is 50 cents. Do you know why we would do that, Carter?

Carter:
I’m sure you’re going to let me know.

JT Lawson:
I would let you know.

Carter:
Please let me know.

JT Lawson:
I’m about to let you know. We offer our first lesson 50 cents, that way people can try it before they buy it. Because I want you to make sure that we’re a good fit for you and I want us to make sure we are a good fit for you, so that way…

Carter:
You didn’t enunciate, fit for you.

JT Lawson:
Okay. Thank you for personally attacking me back. And so basically the goal is we’re going to come out… We’re going to figure out your issues and figure out your goals. Because every dogs different, everyone’s goals are different. So I’m going to come to that first lesson. I’m going to figure out what it’s going to take to get your dog to your goals. And then we are going to talk to you about the different types of training we do. So we do one-on-one lessons where it’s half dog training, half human training. I’ll let you guess which one’s harder. Because it’d be hard to train Carter. And then we have the boarding school where you send your dog to us. That’s anywhere from one to three weeks. Just kind of depends on your goals and how advanced you want the training. And then after that, no matter what, it’s a money back guarantee.

It’s kind us putting our money where our mouth is because a lot of dog trainers in Tulsa would say that it might stick, that the training might stick. And what that means is that it’s their excuse to after they train, that they’re either going to blame you or the dog. And then no matter what you get group class forever. So with aggressive dogs in Tulsa, it’s really good to get aggressive dogs around other dogs because it gets them a chance in a safe environment like our group class where it’s not like a dog park where it’s like 50/50, you don’t know how the other dogs are going to react. And so we want to give you that chance to work on dogs. And we want to be there forever. So I never want to just train your dog and then be like, oh, here’s your dog. It’s been two weeks, may the odds ever be in your favor. I want to be there for life.

But I went to this first lesson for 50 cents. These people, great people, actually one of my favorite clients. I’m not going to say their name because maybe they don’t want their name out there on the website, but they had three dogs. All three dogs had three legs.

Carter:
What are the odds?

JT Lawson:
Not high. I don’t know the actual odds, but not high. Yeah, it’s impressive. And they’re all three dogs, all three legs, all pit bulls. And what happened was they had two dogs, got along great, they get a third dog. I’m going to make up his name, we’re going to call him Timmy.

Carter:
I like Titus.

JT Lawson:
Okay, third dog is Titus, and Titus is a new dog. It comes in, it loves to play, just lots, loves to play. And the older dog… What’s this dog’s name, Carter?

Carter:
Neville.

JT Lawson:
Okay, so Titus likes to play and Neville is older. Neville’s like eight. So he’s over playing. He’s like, hey, I can do it for a little bit, Titus, but after three minutes of consistent playing, I’m freaking done. And so with dogs, Neville tries to correct Titus and it worked for a little bit, right? But then Titus grew up and Titus got big, and now Titus is bigger than Neville. And now what happens is, and this happens with a lot of people, so this is why I’m telling you this story. A lot of people get a new puppy and they’re like, oh, it’s so cute. They’re playing. Oh, my older dog’s going to correct it. And then the pack order’s going to be great, and all the dog’s going to get along and we’re going to let nature take its place. And our dogs are going to live in synchronizey and we’re going to worry about the pack order. And as long as we don’t let our dogs on the bed, they’ll be fine.

These are things I’ve heard from other trainers. So what happens is though, as Titus is going to be like, Neville, you’re not bigger than me anymore. I don’t think that’s allowed to happen. I don’t think I’m going to just let you correct me.

Carter:
And we have the same amount of legs.

JT Lawson:
Yes. So what happens is Titus is like no buddy. Nope, not happening. And so then now Titus is fighting back. And now because Titus is bigger, the fights don’t go like they used to. So now Neville is getting lit up. And with dogs, Carter, how it works is dogs see in pictures. So a lot of people don’t know this, but dogs see in pictures. So dogs can’t think rationally like we do. So if you Carter walk into a Target and somebody punches you in the face, you can logically think, nah, it’s just a one-off.

Carter:
I’m not sure if I would.

JT Lawson:
That doesn’t happen all the time. But then with a dog, what they’re going to be like is, every time I walk through Target, somebody fricking punches me in the face. And so now you have one or two actions, you have a dominant dog, they’re going to be like, whenever I walk through these doors, I’m lighting somebody up, dude. Or if it’s not a dominant dog, they’re going to be super skittish every time they see a dog. But what happens…

Carter:
In Target. That was your example.

JT Lawson:
Yes. Okay, thank you. And what also happens is say Carter in these situations, these are dogs… It just keeps happening over and over. It’s like if we went out to a bar and then we both got drunk and you punched me in the face, I could be like, ah, dude, next morning, we were drunk. I get it. It’s fine. We’re bros still. But then happens next weekend and we get in another fight and you punch me in the face again and I’m like, next morning, it’s all right. It’s not a big deal, dude. It’s fine. We’ll get through it. That third week we get in another fight, I’m going to be like, dude, I think I just freaking hate this dude. Every time I go out with him, he punches me in the face. Maybe next week I’m just going to light him up first. So he can’t fricking do that.

And that’s how dogs think. So what happens is it happens these couple times and then now they just start expecting it. So now it’s like each time I see that dog, it’s on site. I am lighting you up every single time. So that’s what started happening with these dogs. And now they’re getting like… I go there and they can’t even have them look at each other because if they see each other in person, they’re just pissed, just super upset. And so what we had to do is we fixed that with obedience training.

So with them, their biggest things were what we teach at Make Your Dog Epic is come, sit, place and off, and heal. And with them, the biggest things are come and place. The reason being is because if the dog starts to go after the other dog and light them up, I can say, come and it pulls them out of that situation. Or I can say off and it leaves it alone. Or I can say place, and it’s kind of like a doggy timeout. And with us, we would love…

Carter:
Place. Oh, it doesn’t work on you.

JT Lawson:
Okay. So with us, we would love to come out and do that first lesson. And if you want us to do that, you go to makeyourdogepic.com. We work with a ton of… It’s also aggressive dogs or aggressive dogs in Tulsa, and we work with them a bunch. So we would love to come out, do that first lesson for 50 cents, that way you can see us, we can work with your dogs in front of you and figure out what’s going on and help you get to your goals. And as we like to say on this podcast, we’ll talk to you in five minutes.

Carl:
Is your dog and furry friend holding you hostage? Will your dog not stop pulling on its leash and eating your sausage? Who wrote that? Well, I don’t mean to brag, but I actually wrote it and wow, it rhymes. People dig it like a dog. You get it? Okay, so I’m just going to keep reading. Will your dog not stop jumping on you or pooping in your house like you’re on the set of Jumanji or living in a zoo? It only took me two weeks to write that line while sitting at the base of a waterfall while gazing upon my epic dog. The dog that once held me hostage was now my best friend.

Speaker 3:
It’s so good.

Carl:
The dog that would never listen was now all ears.

Speaker 3:
It’s so good. I just want to cry.

Carl:
Pull yourself together, man. And if you too want to transform your dog from a furry terrorist into your best friend, what you need to do is schedule your first lesson at makeyourdogepic.com, where your first lesson is always just 50 cents. And with the savings, you can use that to pay the rent. Again, your first lesson is always just 50 cents at makeyourdogepic.com.

Speaker 3:

Stop your dog from eating your wife’s wedding dress and peeing in your closet on top of your Christmas gifts. Stop the madness at makeyourdogepic.com. Experience the revolutionary focus-based positive reinforcement training and methodology. Our goal is dog obedience, but never at the expense of dog personality. It’s the same dog, but now it’s all ears.

Speaker 3:
Wow, man. Carl, you are a talented vocal artist. You can sense you. I could feel the passion. It’s contagious.

Carl:
Well, my friend, I am passionate about the product. I once went 60 days without sleeping.

Speaker 3:
Really?

Carl:
My wife’s wedding dress got eaten and my neighbor Pam was bitten by my dog.

Speaker 3:
Oh man.

Carl:
My quality of life was at all time low. I actually didn’t invite people over to my home for months because of the new dog. And I always smelled like urine.

Speaker 3:
You do still smell a little bit like dog urine.

Carl:
Well, I made my dog epic. I was hostage. And that’s where the passion comes from. You’ve got to believe in your product and you’ve got to project from the diaphragm.

Speaker 3:
The diaphragm.

Carl:
To bend your knees.

Speaker 3:
Bend the knees, bend the knees.

Carl:
Drink ginger.

Speaker 3:
Drink the ginger.

Carl:
Then you’ve got to ingest apple cider vinegar.

Speaker 3:
Apple cider. I can do that.

Carl:
With a dog bone. You want to chew on the dog bone before them.

Speaker 3:
Hard pass. I’m not going to…

Carl:
Recording so that you can emulate the dog and you should listen to atomic dog.

Speaker 3:
I can do that.

Carl:
But you’re not a dog. But you want to just chew on the bone, the oversized bone, not the regular size bone.

Speaker 3:
Hard pass. Not going to chew on the bone.
